Walter Williams: Busybodies want to scalp Redskins (and others) – There’s a move on to prohibit Washington’s football team from calling itself “Redskins,” even though a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision said that it has that right. Now the name change advocates are turning to the political arena and intimidation. This is the classic method of busybodies and tyrants; they start out with something trivial or small and then magnify and extend it.
Ramesh Ponnuru: Fed should target spending, not inflation – The idea that what this economy needs is more inflation will sound odd to most ears, but a lot of smart people are voicing it. They’re right that we need looser money, but wrong about why.
Michelle Malkin: Played Out: the Liberal Racists’ “Uncle Tom” Card – On Tuesday, Minnesota State Representative Ryan Patrick Winkler took to Twitter to rant about the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down an onerous section of the Voting Rights Act. Winkler fumed: “VRA majority is four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas.” This Ivy League-trained public official and attorney relied on smug bigotry to make his case against a Supreme Court justice who happens to be black. He then deleted the tweet and pleaded ignorance.
Armstrong Williams: Our Disastrous Public School System – America’s public school system has largely become a disaster. State and federal funding for schools is determined by how many kids pass and graduate, as well as score on standardized tests. Administrators are pressured to pass poor students to ensure funding. Teachers are pressured to go along and teach to the tests. The children’s best interests become secondary.
Raynard Jackson: What it Means to Be an American – Everyone wants to carve out their own identity, with individuality being the motivating force behind the move, not the betterment of America. There was a time where we were simply all Americans. Then we became Irish-Americans, Jewish-Americans, African-Americans, etc. We used to all rally around the principle of being an American. Our differences should not be divisive, but a tie that binds us. So, whether we agree or disagree, we are all Americans.
John Yoo: Windsor: Tarring ‘the Political Branches with Bigotry’ – Today’s gay-marriage opinions deflated the balloon on the Prop 8 case, but made DOMA the centerpiece. On first glance, the decision in the DOMA case is embarrassingly deficient. It does not identify the right at stake clearly, it does not specify the standard of review, and it does not explain why Congress is assumed to be acting purely out of bad motives. Once the majority can claim a suspected bad motive on the part of Congress, any law that makes gays worse off is immediately struck down.
Charles Garcia: Leaders Act With Integrity – In their personal and professional lives, great leaders demonstrate integrity at all times. It is impossible to lead if you have no credibility with the people in your organization, and in too many organizations, integrity is just a catch-phrase. Leaders must reinforce the company’s ethical standards, and it’s not enough to just put them in an employee handbook. The penalties vor violating the rules must be enforced and punishment must be more than a verbal slap on the wrist. A true leader finds a way to exemplify the principles of honesty at all times and gets others to follow these same tenets, regardless of the consequences.
Larry Elder: If Paula Deen is out, what about Maher and Sharpton? – If celebrity cook Paula Deen is out because of her decades-old private use of the “n” word, what about its public AND private use by MSNBC’s Al Sharpton? What about HBO host Bill Maher’s use of the “c” word? Maher, on more than one occasion, publicly called former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin the “c” word. He has called her a “dumb tw-t” – a derisive slang word for female genitalia. He has described her son Trig, who has Down syndrome, as “retarded.” But, to be fair, neither Sharpton nor Maher – at least to our knowledge – has called Palin the “n” word. That must explain it.
Dr. Alveda King: Why Won’t Nancy Pelosi Listen? – How can Nancy Pelosi say that she is a practicing Catholic when she admits that her faith doesn’t line up with the teachings of the church? Why won’t she listen to the cries of the babies and their mothers? Does she really not care that women and their babies are suffering great pain and dying from so called legal abortions?
Silvio Canto, Jr.: Kitties open their eyes…what about Obama supporters? – According to experts, a kitty cat opens his or her eyes in a few days after birth. What about people who blindly voted for Obama because he was hip, cool, and the anti-Bush? Will they open their eyes and see the reality? The bad news is that there are still a lot of “yes we can” screamers with their eyes closed.
